The Estonian medicinal products market, second quarter of 2009

The Estonian medicinal products market was 747 million EEK (47,7 million EUR) in wholesale prices in the second quarter of 2009.

The sales divide amongst general pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and other institutions (generally state- and scientific institutions). Compared to the II quarter of 2008 the sales to general pharmacies decreased by 0,3%, over the counter (OTC) sales dropped 1,6% and prescription only medicines (POM) decreased by 0,2%. In total the sales to general pharmacies were 577 million EEK (36,9 million EUR) in the second quarter of 2009. To the hospital pharmacies medicinal products worth 139 million EEK (8,9 million EUR) were sold, which is 9,7% less than in the II quarter of 2008. While POM sales decreased by 9,5% OTC medicines sales dropped 23%.

In addition to human medicinal products market the State Agency of Medicines compiles statistical reports about veterinary products market.

In the second quarter of 2009 15 wholesalers sold veterinary medicines to veterinary- and general pharmacies, veterinarians and other institutions (generally state- and scientific institutions).

The Estonian veterinary products market was in wholesale prices in the II quarter of 2009 36,8 million EEK (2,4 million EUR), which is 7,8% less than in the II quarter of 2008.

Compared to the second quarter of the previous year sales to the veterinarians increased by 5% to the veterinary pharmacies by 9% and to the general pharmacies by 7%. On the other hand sales to the state- and scientific institutions decreased by 45%, constituting to the total veterinary products sale 10,2 million EEK (650 000 EUR) in the II quarter of 2008 and 5,6 million EEK (350 000 EUR) in 2009.
