    Summary of the conference “Medicines – who knows ...”

    The conference “Medicines – who knows ...” was held in Tallinn, in KUMU auditorium on April 21, 2016

    The conference organised by the Estonian State Agency of Medicines was addressed mainly to the doctors and pharmacists with the aim to introduce the medicines regulation worldwide and in the European Union and, also, the role of Estonian State Agency of Medicines in them.

    The conference focused also on the availability of product information and on finding answers to what kind of product information different stakeholders and patients need.

    The opening words for the conference were said by Jevgeni Ossinovski, the Minister of Health and Labour.

    Kristin Raudsepp, the Director General of the Estonian State Agency of Medicines introduced the development of the State Agency of Medicines, its work and activities now and during the past 25 years (her presentation in Estonian can be opened here)

    Lembit Rägo, the first Director General of the Estonian State Agency of Medicines and a long-time Head of the Unit of Regulation of Medicines and other Health Technologies (RHT) at WHO discussed the topics he considers globally important in the field of medicines (his presentation in Estonian can be opened here).

    Tomas Salmonson, the Chair of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), explained his point of view of the idea of medicine regulation in the future, and how businesses and health services can benefit from it.

    Kari Laine, the Finnish national expert in the field of the development of an alert system of electronic medicine information and interaction, explained how eHealth solutions can improve safe and effective use of drugs. Please find his presentations from here.

    The patient's viewpoint was presented by Marco Greco, the President at European Patients' Forum (EPF) and Patients’ organisations representative in the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee at the European Medicines Agency (EMA). He explained what kind of information about medicinal products is needed by the patients, the presentation can be found here.

    Conference was summarized with the discussion, where doctors, pharmacists, officials and citizens, caring about the medicines, discussed what kind of information and in what form is required to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines in Estonia.

    The conference celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Estonian State Agency of Medicines, as the agency was established on 11 April 1991.
