The Estonian Medicinal Products Market in the Fourth Quarter 2025

The medicinal products market increased 7% and the veterinary medicinal products market increased 4% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Human medicines

The Estonian human medicinal products market was 153 million euros in wholesale prices in the fourth quarter of 2025. Compared to the same period of the previous year, the turnover increased 7%. The market of human medicines by quarter during last five years is on Figure 1.

During Q4 2025 there were 25 licensed medicinal product wholesalers, who distributed human medicines to general or hospital pharmacies or to other institutions in Estonia. Sales to general pharmacies covered 73.4%, sales to hospital pharmacies 25.4% and sales to other institutions 1.2% of total medicinal products market.

The sales of prescription medicines covered 89% and the sales of over-the-counter medicines 11% of the pharmaceutical market.

The most used medicines by DDD/1000/day were cardiovascular system medicines (592 DDD/1000/day), followed by alimentary tract and metabolism medicines (256 DDD/1000/day) and nervous system medicines (199 DDD/1000/day). These three ATC groups covered 67% of overall medicines consumption in Estonia in Q4 2025.

Altogether 1361 different active substances were marketed and the most used active substances were Rosuvastatin (87 DDD/1000/day), Ramipril (58 DDD/1000/day), and Atorvastatin (58 DDD/1000/day).

The most sold medicines by turnover were antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents (38 million euros), alimentary tract and metabolism medicines (26 million euros) and medicines for nervous system (16 million euros). The market share of these three ATC groups was altogether 52%

Veterinary medicines

The Estonian veterinary medicinal products market was 4.8 million euros in wholesale prices in the fourth quarter of 2025. Compared to the same period of the previous year the turnover increased 4%. From the overall sales, 95% of veterinary medicines were sold to the veterinarians or to the agricultural companies represented by a veterinarian, and 5% to the general and veterinary pharmacies.

The most sold medicines by turnover were immunologicals, followed by antiparasitic products and antiinfectives for systemic use, accounting for 24%, 19% and 18% of total veterinary medicines sales, respectively.
