Human Medicines Statistics
The statistics on human medicines are based on wholesale distribution to community and hospital pharmacies, as well as to other institutions (such as care facilities, government and research institutions, etc.).
In 2024, a total of 64 companies held a wholesale distribution authorisation for medicinal products in Estonia. Of these, 27 companies were engaged in the distribution of human medicines to community and hospital pharmacies and other institutions.
The market volume of medicinal products intended for human use continues to show a steady growth trend. In 2024, the turnover of human medicines reached €515 million, representing a 12.8% increase compared to 2023. Prescription medicines accounted for 87% and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for 13% of the total market volume.
The most commonly used active substances among prescription medicines were rosuvastatin, ramipril, and atorvastatin. Among OTC medicines, the most frequently used were the combination of acetylsalicylic acid and magnesium oxide, xylometazoline, and ibuprofen.
In total, 4,890 medicine packages and 1,438 active substances were distributed in Estonia in 2024.
Veterinary Medicines Statistics
The statistics on veterinary medicines are based on wholesale distribution to veterinarians, community and veterinary pharmacies, and other institutions.
In 2024, eight wholesalers supplied veterinary medicines to veterinarians, pharmacies, and other institutions.
The market volume of veterinary medicines has continued to grow in recent years, reaching nearly €20 million in 2024. The three largest therapeutic groups by turnover were antiparasitic products (QP), immunologicals (QI), and anti-infectives (QJ).
The total volume of active substances sold decreased by 12% compared to the previous year, amounting to 5.2 tonnes. Between 2020 and 2024, the turnover of immunologicals increased from €3.1 million to €4.2 million. Vaccines for pigs generated the highest turnover, followed by vaccines for cattle and dogs.
